paint samples in october tell the truth. in july they lie.
in summer the light in paris flatters everything. a cool grey looks fresh, a white looks white. then mid october comes, the sky turns the colour of the zinc roofs by 5pm, and half the walls people picked in august suddenly feel like a waiting room 🙃
so my one rule when someone wants to choose colours: tape the swatch on the north wall and look at it late afternoon, on a grey day. still love it? then you will love it all year. warm whites, clay, a bit of ochre, deep green usually pass. pure cold greys almost never do.
colours are not chosen in the shop. they are chosen in the worst light the room will ever have.
