Why is an hour 60 minutes and not 100?
We count almost everything else in tens. Money, metres, kilos.
But time still runs on a system that goes back thousands of years, to the Babylonians, who counted in 60s.
And 60 is actually a very handy number. You can split it by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30 and never get a messy fraction.
Try that with 100.
France did try decimal time after the revolution. 10 hours in a day, 100 minutes in an hour. It lasted less than two years.
So maybe the old way is not old. Maybe it was just smarter than we think 🤔
