The clocks go back on Sunday. From next week most of us will come home in the dark, and that is when I find out if a room really works.
Many people choose paint, sofa and curtains on a bright Saturday afternoon. It looks great. Then November comes and the same room feels flat and a bit cold by 5pm.
Usually the problem is one big light in the middle of the ceiling doing all the work.
I always say think in three levels. Something low, like a table lamp or a floor lamp in the corner. Something at eye level for reading or cooking. And only then the ceiling light, ideally on a dimmer.
Warm bulbs help too. Around 2700K feels like a home, the cold white ones feel like an office.
It does not need a big budget. Two lamps moved to the right corners can change the whole evening.
Which room in your home do you avoid in winter evenings?
