When Google traffic drops, most people start changing things straight away: new titles, new pages, sometimes a whole redesign. That usually makes it harder to see what actually happened. Check five things first, in this order, and change nothing until you know which one it is.
Open Google Search Console, not only your analytics tool. If Search Console clicks are steady but analytics shows a fall, the problem is the tracking code, a cookie banner or a theme update, not Google. This is the most common "drop", and the cheapest to fix.
In Search Console, compare the last 28 days with the 28 days before, then sort by pages. If one or two pages lost most of the clicks, look at those pages only. Was the text changed, the URL moved, or did someone else start answering the same question better?
Paste the URL into the URL Inspection tool. A page set to noindex by mistake, blocked in robots.txt, or redirected during a site change can disappear in days. On Shopify and other platforms, a theme or app update can change these settings without anyone noticing.
Search your main query yourself. Sometimes your position is the same, but Google now shows an AI overview, a map pack, videos or shopping results above you. You have not lost rank, you have lost visibility. The answer then is not more SEO on the same page, but being the source those boxes and AI answers quote: a clear question as the title, the answer early in the text, real facts and real prices.
Google lists its core updates on the Search Status Dashboard. If your drop starts the same day as an update and the whole site is affected, it is usually about overall quality and trust, not one technical error. Those recoveries are slow, often until the next update, and they come from improving the most visited pages, not from quick tricks.
After a fix, wait a few weeks before you judge it. Google itself says some changes show within hours and others take months. Changing everything every week only makes it impossible to know what worked.
