No single standard covers a wood-fired sauna. The stove, the chimney, the sizing calculation and the national sign-off each sit under a different rule.
The stove test standard changed. CEN withdrew EN 15821:2010 on 28 May 2025 and replaced it with EN 16510-2-10:2025.
Ecodesign doesn't apply. Article 1(2)(f) of Regulation (EU) 2015/1185 excludes sauna stoves from the solid fuel local space heater requirements.
Clearance to combustibles is a type-test result, not a rule of thumb. HUUM declares 190 mm at the sides, 250 mm at the back and 900 mm at the front of the HIVE Wood 13, plus 1,200 mm above the stove.
The stove standard covers the appliance. It says nothing about your customer's chimney, your customer's timber wall or the acceptance that follows.
Norway makes the owner notify the municipality once a new fireplace is installed. Sweden makes the work wait for a startbesked before it starts.
What your customer keeps is a set of papers, not a CE plate: the stove's declaration of performance, the manual with the tested distances, the chimney's own declaration and the sign-off.
A wood-fired sauna can be built perfectly and still fail its national sign-off. We fit Harvia and HUUM stoves in Klaipėda, so we read the clearance tables before every shipment leaves. By the end of this article you'll know which standard covers each part of the installation, and which documents your customer keeps.
No single standard covers your wood-fired sauna stove, and that's the whole problem. The appliance is tested to a sauna-specific product standard, currently EN 16510-2-10:2025, which replaced EN 15821:2010 after CEN withdrew it on 28 May 2025. The chimney sits under EN 1856-1 and EN 1856-2. Its sizing sits under EN 13384-1. Clearance to timber comes from the stove's own type test. Acceptance is national, and nobody exports that part for you.
Four standards, one national procedure, four separate documents. Here's where the reseller loses the argument.
Search the clearance question in English and you'll get a figure. Usually 400 to 600 mm, usually followed by "check your local regulations". It comes from sales blogs, from American resellers quoting American clearance tables, and from overseas factories that have never sent a stove to a European test house.
The figure isn't wrong. It's unowned.
A clearance distance only means something attached to a specific stove, at its specific output, with its specific shielding. HUUM publishes 190 mm at the sides and 250 mm at the back of the HIVE Wood 13, 900 mm at the front, and 1,200 mm above the stove. HUUM also allows those distances to be halved with a single heat barrier and cut to a quarter with a double one, provided at least 30 mm stays clear between the barrier and the protected surface. None of that is a general rule. It's that stove's test result.
Now think about who's standing there when it goes wrong. Not the factory. You.
Your crew bolts the cabin down in November. The sweep arrives, asks for the chimney's declaration of performance, and the folder holds one document: a CE certificate for the stove. The sauna is finished, heated and unusable until somebody produces the rest. That's a warranty visit and a customer who now doubts everything else you sold them.
Run it in your own numbers. Two installers, one return trip, half a day each, plus the crane you already paid for once. That's the price of a document that weighs nothing and could have travelled in the crate.
There are three tracks, and mixing them is what produces the confusion. The product track is European and ends in a declaration of performance. The installation track is national building law. The operation track is fire prevention law, and it puts a chimney sweep with statutory powers in your customer's garden.
As of July 2026 the appliance track reads like this. EN 15821:2010 covered design, manufacture, construction, safety and performance of multi-firing sauna stoves, the type where the stones are heated indirectly by the fire and the flue gases. EN 16510-2-10:2025 carries that scope forward. One caution before you accept a fresh document. A standard gives presumption of conformity under the Construction Products Regulation only while its reference is cited in the Official Journal, and CEN's withdrawal and the Commission's citation are two different acts. Ask which reference the declaration of performance actually names.
Element | Standard that applies | What must be tested or declared | Who checks it nationally | What your customer keeps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The stove | EN 16510-2-10:2025, replacing EN 15821:2010 (withdrawn 28 May 2025) | Safety, efficiency, emissions, clearance to combustibles, initial type testing, factory production control | Nobody at delivery. It surfaces once the installation is questioned | Declaration of performance plus the CE marking data |
Chimney and connecting flue pipe | EN 1856-1 for system chimney products, EN 1856-2 for liners and connecting flue pipes | Temperature class, pressure and soot-fire resistance, declared distance to combustible material | NO and DE: the district sweep. SE: inspection report before slutbesked | Chimney declaration of performance and the designation on its plate |
Chimney sizing | EN 13384-1, chimneys serving one combustion appliance | Draught and flue gas temperature calculated for that stove, that flue height, that climate | Installer or designer, verified at sign-off | The calculation sheet |
Wall or roof penetration | The chimney's tested protective distance, plus national fire rules (FI: Decree 745/2017 on chimney structures and fire safety) | Protective distance through the timber structure, established by testing or by a verified calculation method | FI and SE: building authority. NO: the municipality, and erecting a chimney is an application matter | Installation photos and the installer's statement |
Clearance to combustibles around the stove | The stove's own type test, printed in its manual | Sides, back, front and above, plus the reduction allowed with a single or double heat barrier | The sweep at first inspection | The manual itself, in the customer's language |
Acceptance and notification | National law, not a European standard | That the finished installation exists on the authority's register | NO: owner notifies the municipality. SE: anmälan, startbesked, then slutbesked. DE: Feuerstättenschau by the district sweep | The national sign-off document |
Read the table sideways and which standard covers your wood-fired sauna stove stops being one question. The standard covers the stove. Everything to the right of it is somebody else's signature, and the reseller is the only person who touches all six rows.
The national column is where the four markets stop agreeing. In Norway the owner of a building must notify the municipality when a new fireplace has been installed, or other substantial changes made to the heating installation, under section 6 of the fire prevention regulation (accessed July 2026). Fitting the stove in an existing building is exempt from a building application. Erecting the chimney isn't. In Sweden, installing or substantially changing a fireplace or flue in a building needs an anmälan, a startbesked before work starts and a slutbesked before use. In Germany the district sweep runs the Feuerstättenschau, at earliest three years and at latest five years after the previous one.
Here's the list. Copy it into your purchase order so the answers travel with the goods, rather than arrive after the sweep asks.
Which standard is the stove type-tested to, EN 15821:2010 or EN 16510-2-10:2025, and which reference does the declaration of performance name?
Send the declaration of performance as a file, not a photo of a plate.
Send the installation manual in the destination language, with the clearance table on a page I can print.
State clearance to combustibles at the sides, the back, the front and above, in millimetres, with no heat shield fitted.
State the reduction allowed with a single heat shield and with a double one, and the minimum air gap behind it.
Confirm the flue connection diameter, and whether the stove ships with or without its chimney.
Confirm the chimney's own declaration of performance, its temperature and soot-fire classification, and its declared distance to combustible material.
Seven questions. If a supplier answers five by return email and stalls on two, you've learned something about how that factory is run.
You don't need to run all seven this week. Take the last wood-fired unit you shipped, open its folder and check one thing: whether the chimney has a declaration of performance of its own, separate from the stove's. If it doesn't, the sweep in Bergen or Borås will find that out before you do. It's your invoice on the callback, not the factory's.
EN 15821:2010 set requirements for the design, manufacture, construction, safety and performance of multi-firing sauna stoves burning natural wood logs, performance meaning efficiency and emissions. It also specified initial type testing, factory production control and marking. It excluded single-firing heat storage stoves, mechanically fed stoves and stoves with any electrical connection.
As far as its own type test says, and no general figure replaces that. HUUM declares 190 mm at the sides, 250 mm at the back, 900 mm at the front and 1,200 mm above the stove for the HIVE Wood 13. Those distances may be halved with a single heat barrier and quartered with a double one.
In Norway the building owner must notify the municipality once a new fireplace is installed, which is how the sweep's inspection register stays current. In Sweden the route runs through the building authority instead: an anmälan and a startbesked before the work, then a slutbesked, supported by a sweep's inspection report, before the sauna is used.
No. Regulation (EU) 2015/1185 sets ecodesign requirements for solid fuel local space heaters of 50 kW or less, and Article 1(2)(f) excludes sauna stoves from its scope. The regulation defines a sauna stove as a solid fuel local space heater incorporated in, or declared to be used in, dry or wet saunas and similar environments.
No. CE marking and the declaration of performance cover the appliance as a product under the Construction Products Regulation. The chimney carries its own declaration, the sizing calculation is a separate document, and acceptance of the finished installation is a national procedure with a national signature on it.
Alongside them, never instead of them. The stove standard is separate from the product standard for the cabin, covered in our note on EN 18164:2026, and separate again from the siting question in building permits for outdoor saunas. Three files, one delivery.

Which Customs Code Applies to Your Prefabricated Sauna?
Key Takeaways A prefabricated sauna is normally classified under heading 9406, prefabricated buildings, not under Chapter 44 as an article of wood. In the EU the code is CN 9406 10 00, of wood, and the third-country duty is 2.70% (EU Access2Markets, accessed July 2026). Note 4 to…
How Deep Must Your Sauna Foundation Go Below Frost?
Key Takeaways Eurocode 7 gives three routes past frost, not one: soil that isn't frost-susceptible, a foundation level beneath frost-free depth, or frost eliminated by insulation (EN 1997-1, clause 6.4(2)). Frost-free depth is national, not European. Denmark's National Annex sets…
