You can tell where a cheap sauna's discount came from before you sign anything. We build by hand in Klaipėda, on the Baltic coast, and our timber comes from within roughly 200 km of the workshop. By the end of this article you'll know the three corners that get cut, and the questions that expose each one.
A cheap outdoor sauna is worth it when the price comes off the model, the finish or the shipping distance. It stops being worth it when the price comes off three things: the timber inside the cabin, the wall that holds the heat, and the details that carry a European winter. Those three are where the money hides, and none of them is visible in a showroom. Ask which of the three the discount came from. A supplier who can't answer has already answered.
Here's how each corner gets cut, and what each one bills you later.
The benchmark most buyers use is landed price per unit. It's the easiest number to compare and the least useful one. It prices the cabin and ignores everything the cabin hands you afterwards.
Two units at the same landed price can carry very different work. One arrives finished. The other arrives as a project, with your crew's hours attached to it.
Once a sauna is assembled at our facility, we check it before it ships. When someone on the team asks why that check is worth a whole morning, I give them the same answer: "Cheap overseas saunas cut cost by cutting corners: treated timber that off-gasses, weak heat retention, units that fail in a European winter."
Three corners. Not seven, and not a general feeling about quality.
Each one saves the maker real money at the factory gate. Each one bills somebody later. The timber bills the person sitting inside. The wall bills whoever pays the electricity. The winter details bill you, because your name is on the warranty and your phone rings in March.
So the useful comparison isn't price against price. It's price against the corner the discount came from.
Off-gassing means the timber releases what was put into it, and heat speeds that up. A sauna is the worst possible room for it. You take a small, sealed cabin, run it to bathing temperature, and ask a person to sit inside and breathe deeply.
"Treated" isn't one thing. It can mean preservative-treated boards meant for a fence. It can also mean panels held together with adhesives that keep releasing formaldehyde long after the press.
The EU has fixed a number for that second case. From 6 August 2026 the emission limit for wood-based articles and furniture is 0.062 mg/m³, according to the European Commission (accessed July 2026). Hold any supplier's interior boards against that figure and ask for the test.
Thermal modification works differently. Wood is modified at elevated temperature in the presence of steam under atmospheric pressure, without added chemicals, according to the International ThermoWood Association (accessed July 2026). Nothing goes in that has to come back out in the heat. We've written more about the material in our earlier article on thermowood.
Heat retention decides what the sauna costs after the invoice is paid. A thin, poorly sealed wall doesn't remove the heater. It makes the heater run longer to reach temperature, and longer again to hold it, every single session.
Here's how you put a number on it without trusting anyone's brochure. Take the heater's rated output in kilowatts from its spec sheet. Multiply by the hours it runs for one session, and you have the kilowatt-hours per session. Multiply that by your local price per kilowatt-hour, and you have the cost of one bathe. Now run the same three lines again with one extra half hour of heat-up, because that's what a weak wall buys you.
The difference looks trivial on one Saturday. Multiply it by the sessions your customer runs each week, then by the years they'll keep the sauna. It stops looking trivial.
The wall is also the part that's hard to retrofit. Your customer can swap the heater in an afternoon. They can't change the wall build without taking the sauna apart.
Our cube line runs 120 mm walls. That isn't a marketing number. It's the reason the heater stops working so hard once the cabin is up to temperature.
That's the part cheap outdoor saunas can't give back.
Winter doesn't test a sauna once. It tests it every thaw. Water gets into a joint, freezes, expands, and opens that joint a little wider for the next time.
The failures start where materials meet. Glass, timber and metal all move at different rates, so the door frame, the glazing fixings and the roof junction take the load the flat panels don't. A cabin built to look right in a photograph will pass a summer. The same cabin in February shows you every junction that was rushed.
Assembly is the other half of it. A sauna bolted together on a plot in the rain gets no chance to reveal a bad joint before the customer owns it. We assemble and check every sauna at our facility before it ships, so partners receive a finished product rather than a project.
Moisture. Movement. Heat cycling.
That's the whole test, and it runs for free outside our workshop door every winter.

You spot it in the paperwork, before anyone ships anything. Each corner leaves a trace in a document, and a supplier either has that document or doesn't.
The timber. Ask what species sits on the interior faces, how it was treated, and for the emission test report. Here's how you check it: copy these three lines into your next email.

Any real factory can send all three inside a week. The ones who can't have already told you what the discount paid for.
As of July 2026, those are the three requests we'd put in writing before any deposit moves.
You don't need to run all three checks on every supplier this month. Do one thing: take the last unit you bought from your current supplier, find its serial number, and ask for the pre-shipment inspection record for that unit. Read what's on it, and read what isn't.
It's your name on the sauna after the truck leaves.
No. A lower price is fine when it comes from a simpler model, a shorter shipping route or a smaller cabin. It becomes a bad buy when the saving comes out of the interior timber, the wall build or the winter details. Those three are the parts your customer can't fix later.
Not always, but timber is the easiest place to save without it showing in a photograph. Ask which species sits on the interior faces and how it was treated. Thermal modification uses heat and steam without added chemicals. Preservative treatment does not, and heat keeps pulling it back out.
