Short answer: No.
Here's what's actually happening: OpenAI tried to make people buy directly inside ChatGPT and it simply failed. Maybe too early, maybe somehting else was a challange, but here's what I've found:
Out of millions of Shopify stores, fewer than 30 made it work and made successfull business and revenue. The others - failed, millions of eligible Shopify merchants. The chatbot interface was easy. The plumbing underneath - taxes, returns, shipping, fraud, refunds, turned out to be the actual problem. So, simply - killed the feature in March 2026.
But something else is changing fast
👉 60% of Google searches now end without a click - AI answers questions before you reach a website, Google traffic to publishers fell 38% in a year. So to answer this in short - your store isn't dying but the road to it is.
So what wins in 2027?
Four simple things:
1. Your own store - for trust, returns, finishing the sale
2. Clean product data - so AI can find you
3. Marketplaces - Amazon, Etsy, Vinted, as a parallel channel
4. Your email list - because platforms change the rules overnight
The mistake to avoid?
Don't panic. Don't pay €5,000/month to "AI-optimise" your store yet. But smart would be to just do the free stuff: clean your product data, write content AI can read and watch your numbers. I'm serious - whatch numbers and react on the spot when somehitng is changing, dropping or growing.
When AI traffic hits 5% of your visitors, then invest more. Jsut recommendation, not advise!
Every five years something is supposed to kill websites.
Mobile didn't. Apps didn't. Social didn't.
AI won't either 🤞
Your store still wins. The door just moved a lot but didn't close!
