If your ChatGPT traffic "dropped" last week and Direct suddenly went up, don't start rewriting your website yet :D
Since around 9 October a lot of clicks from ChatGPT arrive with no referrer and no utm_source=chatgpt.com tag. ChatGPT now opens links with noreferrer, so GA4 has nothing to recognise and the visit lands in Direct. OpenAI hasn't said yet if this is on purpose or a bug.
Adobe's Cedric Huesler looked at about 500 pages that got at least 5% of their traffic from ChatGPT. From 9 to 13 October ChatGPT visits fell by roughly 31,000 a day, and Direct on the same pages went up by about 26,000 a day. So the people are still coming. We just can't see where from anymore. Sitebrunch has the whole breakdown if you want to dig in: https://www.sitebrunch.com/en/news/chatgpt-referrer-utm-source-missing
What I'm doing with my own reports this week:
1. Put an annotation on 9 October, so nobody panics in a month when they look at the chart.
2. Add ChatGPT and Direct together and compare before and after. If the sum is flat, nothing was lost, only the label.
3. Look at conversions, not only sessions.
This is the annoying part of GEO. The one number that showed AI answers send real people to your site just got blurry. Getting cited still matters the same. Proving it got harder.
