Apple Music has a new icon. The red note is gone. In the iOS 27.2 beta it's black and white now, a bit bolder, tilted a little, with a tiny shadow. That's it.
And the internet reacted like someone cancelled Christmas.
"The worst logo change of all time." "Miserable." "This ain't it chief." I scrolled through the reactions in Engadget's write-up this week and laughed more than I should have: https://engadget.com/2286289/people-are-hating-on-apple-music-redesigned-black-and-white-logo
Do I love it? Not really. It looks like the app is going through an emo phase. 🖤
But look at what actually happened. A music note changed colour on a phone screen and people wrote headlines about it. Nobody writes headlines about a logo they don't care about. That anger is just attachment wearing a frown.
Most small brands would kill for this problem. We could change our logo tomorrow and the only person who'd notice is the printer.
Creative Bloq quoted one comment I liked more than all the rage. Someone guessed the plain mark is there so the artists can bring the colour on billboards, while Apple goes after Spotify. Maybe. Maybe not. Smart reading either way: a logo that steps back so the content can shout.
That's the bit worth stealing. Your logo doesn't have to do all the work. Sometimes the quiet version is the frame and whatever you put inside it is the painting.
Will Apple keep it? It's still a beta, they can walk it back. My bet is they won't. Give it a month and nobody will remember the red one.
Be different. Even in black and white.
