Remember when every second SEO tip was "just get on Reddit"?
New Ahrefs data: ChatGPT cited Reddit in 19.1% of US answers in March. In September, 2.3%.
Wikipedia went from 14.1% to 2.9%.
At the same time PubMed jumped from 64th to 4th place among the most cited sites. WebMD fell from 18th to 79th. Britannica and Investopedia dropped out of the top 200.
Search Engine Journal wrote it up on Monday, worth reading the whole thing: https://searchenginejournal.com/chatgpt-most-cited-sites-primary-sources-ahrefs/592682
So what is the pattern?
Primary sources win.
Rewritten explainers lose.
If your content only summarises what somebody else already said, AI has less and less reason to mention you.
What still makes sense:
• Your own data
• Your own experience
• Clear answers on your own brand site
That last one is not random. When ChatGPT ran a site: search on one of the most searched domains, 75.9% of the time it was a brand's own website.
Citations are not traffic, Ahrefs says it too. But being the source is still better than being the copy.
So which one are you writing?
