We are constantly looking for a new framework, a new tool, a new strategy or some magic formula that will suddenly change everything for us. But most of the time there is no magic. Sometimes the simplest things, done properly and consistently, work the best. I just read this post, and I think it is absolutely brilliant. Not because there is some secret formula in it, but actually for the opposite reason. Most of the things are so simple and obvious.
This is one of the things I like about Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett’s way of thinking. Discipline and time can do incredible things. But there is an important part that we sometimes forget. Repeating something for ten years doesn’t automatically make you good at it.
If I play chess every day for ten years, I will probably get better. But if I keep making the same stupid moves, never study, never take a lesson and never learn from my mistakes, I might spend ten years becoming very good at playing bad chess.
Business or a social media is not that different. Do the work. Look at what happened. Learn something. Change something. Do it again.
That’s why I liked the original post I'm sharing below - so much. These aren’t huge changes. They are small rules and small actions you can start today. Leave one useful comment. Answer one real customer question. Publish something useful and just try something different from what you did yesterday.
