
In Sudan, something quietly hopeful is happening in the middle of hardship. Through the Sustain Sudan project — run with partners including the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), CIMMYT and Sustain Africa — 101,634 farmers across 11 states received the inputs they needed to farm again. Those inputs went onto 214,158 hectares and helped produce 259,200 tonnes of potatoes and 500,151 tonnes of wheat.
But the real story isn't the tonnage. It's what fertile land does to a community — because behind those numbers are women who can once again grow food, earn income, and provide for their families without leaving home. And that points to something the world consistently underestimates: soil fertility is not only an agricultural issue. It's one of the deepest levers we have for stability, equality and peace.
Migration rarely starts with a border. It starts with a field that no longer feeds a family. When soil degrades — losing organic matter, structure and biological life — yields collapse, incomes vanish, and people are forced to move to cities or across borders in search of survival. The UN Convention to Combat Desertification links land degradation directly to displacement, estimating that it pushes millions from their homes every year.
Reverse that, and the logic reverses too. A family whose land is productive has a reason — and the means — to stay. Fertile soil keeps smaller regions alive, keeps villages populated, and slows the drain of people away from the land that could sustain them.
Scarcity breeds conflict. When fertile land and water become rare, communities that once coexisted begin to compete — herders against farmers, village against village, over a shrinking base of productive ground. Many of the world's most painful rural conflicts have degraded land and failing harvests somewhere near their roots.
Abundant, restored soil eases exactly that pressure. When land produces enough, the fight over the last fertile hectare loses its urgency. Fertility is, in a very real sense, a de-escalation strategy.
The Sudan story makes one more thing clear: when women farmers get the resources they need, they don't just participate in recovery — they drive it. Productive land turns dependence into income, and income into independence, opportunity and standing in the community. Restore the soil, and you don't just grow more food; you grow equality and self-determination alongside it.
