So the fastest audit isn't the catalogue. It's the refusal list: the wall spec it won't thin, the heater it won't swap, the unit it won't ship unchecked, and the timber it won't buy blind.
That list is short, and it's the part of a supplier profile nobody publishes.
Most buyers start with the catalogue. Model count, sizes, lead times, a folder of certificates, a page of renders. All of it is written by the side of the business that wants the order.
None of it is produced by the workshop.
So the audit measures how well a supplier sells, and you already knew they could sell. That's the wrong benchmark, and it's the one thin factories are built to pass. A long catalogue costs a rendering fee. A short refusal list costs real orders.
Here's the thing about breadth. A factory that says yes to every size, every glass panel and every wall build isn't more capable than one that says no. It's running the same jig either way, and someone downstream absorbs the difference.
Usually that's your installer. Sometimes it's your warranty desk in the second spring.
Now look at the opposite signal. When a factory tells you it won't do something, it's spending its own money to say so. That's the only part of a supplier conversation that carries a cost, which is exactly why it carries information.
When someone on my team asks why we let a good market sit empty, the words I use are the same every time: "We are selective. We would rather hold a market open than place the wrong partner in it."
That isn't a pitch. It's a cost decision, and every manufacturer makes it one way or the other. Some make it out loud. Some make it quietly, by shipping whatever was ordered and letting the customer find the compromise later.
Call the failure by its name. The Two-Season Apology is the unit that photographs well at handover and gets apologised for by its second spring.
It's never one big fault. It's four small yeses.
Thin the wall, and heat retention drops. Swap a named heater for an unmarked one, and the control gear becomes a lottery. Skip the factory assembly, and the first time the parts meet is on a wet site. Buy timber blind, and you can't answer the one question a regulator will put to you.
None of those four is visible in a showroom. All four are visible after two winters. Moisture. Movement. Heat cycling.

Then time the reply. A factory reads its own shop floor in hours. A trading company has to go and ask someone else.
