A mobile app doesn't just give customers another way to reach you — it converts them at roughly triple the rate of your mobile website. That gap alone is why "should we build an app" has stopped being a debate for most growing businesses and become a revenue question with a clear answer.
Mobile web still carries most of the traffic — but it converts the least. Retail and ecommerce mobile web traffic converts at around 1.82%, compared to 3.14% on desktop. Dedicated apps flip that story entirely: the strongest DTC brands running their own app are seeing 5–8% conversion, several times what their mobile website manages on its own.
The reasons are mostly friction, not preference:
Checkout is easier. Mobile web checkout abandonment sits around 80–85%, driven by small-screen form entry. Apps store payment details, addresses, and login once — friction that a browser makes you repeat every visit.
People browse more. App users view roughly 2.9x more products per session than mobile web users, simply because pages load instantly and there's no browser chrome eating the screen.
Re-engagement is nearly free. Push notifications drive 3–10x higher engagement than email, and they cost nothing per send once someone has the app installed.
None of this means every business needs a native app tomorrow. It means the calculation has shifted: the businesses winning right now aren't the ones with the most mobile traffic — they're the ones converting the traffic they already have. If your mobile web conversion is sitting at industry-average (under 2%), an app isn't a nice-to-have feature; it's the highest-leverage fix available, because it attacks the exact friction points — slow load, repeated logins, clunky checkout — that are currently costing you the sale.
The businesses that treat this as urgent are the ones who'll own the customer relationship for the next decade. The ones waiting for "someday" are handing that relationship, and the lifetime value that comes with it, to whoever builds the app first.
