Yesterday a message landed in InterioApp from a retailer building their online store - "I'm building our e-commerce site from scratch, but the pain point we have is the business calculator - I want to see how it works."
That one sentence is the whole industry right now.
InterioApp's founder @darius-baltunis in window covering business is since 2011. Made-to-measure has problems that other retailers doesn't - there is no price until there are measurements and fabrics and styles and designs selected. Width, drop, fabric, lining, heading, motorization. A standard webshop can't handle it, so retailers put up "request a quote" forms and wait. The customer doesn't wait. Whoever shows a correct price first usually takes the order.
That's why a calculator on your website is not a nice to have. It's the difference between a visitor and a buyer. Thats why I'd liek to tell more about how important is to choose the company behind it (like you'd choose a fabric supplier for your business).
You're not buying software, you're picking a partner for years. Ask them to load YOUR price list, not a demo. Ask who fixes it when a formula is wrong and how fast. Ask if the website, quotes and orders live in one system or you'll be gluing three tools together with copy paste or APIs. Ask if they ever measured a window themselves. And what are the prices if you are growing and need some minor changes or updates.
And trust the numbers only after you tested them. We've had calculation bugs and other gaps in InterioApp platform too - which is normal, the most important is how you deal with all this. It pushed us to document every formula in the system. One wrong multiplier and you quote at a loss for months without knowing. Test your price list against the system. Monthly.
The screenshot below is why I'm writing this. That inquiry came through the website and landed as a client record - message, source, timestamp - because ecommerce and the in-house side of InterioApp are now connected. Website lead to quote to order to supplier PO, one flow. No lead dies in an inbox.

Now the uncomfortable part. When retailers open a physical branch they understand the math - fit out, rent, sample books, staff, easily 60-100k before it pays back, and they accept a year to break even. Then the same people go online with 3k and expect it to outsell the showroom. Invest 10x less, get 20x more. This will never happen. No matter what you hear on YouTube. It doesn't mean that it can't - it just doesn't work like that. And we will explain how it works.
An online store is also a branch. A serious one costs 10-20k to set up properly, 1-2k a month in marketing, and your hours every week. Competition is higher than on your high street - but so is the return, because the rent is lower, you no need 3-5 team members to sell, no walls, and most of the time it sells while you sleep, so it saves your time as well.
Who shouldn't do it - anyone who can't give 12-18 months of patience, or whose pricing lives only in their head. Online doesn't fix chaos, it multiplies it.
Who wins - the ones who niche down, put instant pricing on the site, answer the same day, keep everything in one system and measure it like a real branch.
The winning retailers right now aren't the biggest. They're the ones who answer first with a correct price.
Thanks for your time. Let's do a demo if you are looking software for your in-house and online business. Send me a message or book a demo through the website.
